Airport History

Franklin Field was constructed in the early 1960’s and formally dedicated in October 1965.  The airport was named in honor of Commander Charles H. Franklin II, a Union Springs native, aviation pioneer, barnstormer, WW-II naval officer, and chairman of the local organization that originally sponsored the airport.
